Incident at Hythe- update

Following a fire at Hythe Shipyard in St John Road this morning, Tuesday, October 30 it has been discovered that a gas pipe has been fractured nearby.

All activity at the scene of this morning’s incident has been suspended until Transco are able to complete work on the pipe, this work is currently underway.

Members of the public are advised to avoid Hythe town centre for the rest of the day.

Commuters travelling by ferry from Southampton to Hythe this evening are advised that there may be some disruption when they arrive in Hythe as a result of this morning’s fire.

The main route in and out of Hythe at present is via Frost Lane and motorists should use this route until further notice.

18 properties have been affected by the exclusion zone, three in New Road, four in St John Road and 11 in St Christopher Court.

 
Fire at Business premises in Hythe

A 200 metre cordon remains in place in Hythe following a fire at Hythe Shipyard in St John Street this morning, Tuesday, October 30.

Police were called to the incident at approximately 7.40am. An exclusion zone was put in place as a safety precaution because gas cylinders are stored on site. No-one has been injured as a result of the incident.

Approximately 20 homes inside the exclusion zone have been evacuated. New Forest District Council Emergency Planning Department have set up a rest centre at Applemore. Those evacuated include residents of a sheltered housing complex.

Anyone with concerns about the evacuation should contact the New Forest District Council Planning Officer at the control centre outside St Johns Church.

The fire has now been contained; however fire officers remain on site damping down, which could take up to 24 hours. While this process takes place the 200 metre exclusion zone remains in place.

The exclusion zone covers Waitrose supermarket to the seafront and St John Street to Scott Paine Drive.

The Hythe Ferry is not affected although today’s market has been cancelled.
