The British Robin is modeling its bright red chest, houses are filled with colourful lights and couples are kissing under the mistletoe; the festive season has well and truly arrived.
It’s also the time of year to celebrate and share gifts with the people we value.
But why not spend a bit of time to give a present to the environment as well?
Here are a few simple ideas to reducing, reusing and recycling your waste this Christmas.
Food
We all love the big feast on Christmas day, but this year think about how much food your family can really eat in just one afternoon. Did you know that on average a third of all food bought is thrown away?
Try to plan your meals in advance and only buy what you need, this will not just reduce your food waste, but will be kind to your wallet as well.
Christmas Wrapping
Traditional Christmas wrapping, made from a combination of paper and foil is not recyclable. Present your gifts in reusable bags or make your own gift wrap by decorating some paper.
If you receive a gift with un-recyclable gift wrapping try to store it for reuse next year.
Christmas Cards
Remember that Christmas cards are recyclable.
After you have taken your Christmas cards down from around the house make sure they end up in your recycling. Give your Christmas cards the gift of being able to become note paper, newspaper or even another Christmas card.
Christmas Recycling
Keep on separating your card, paper, plastic bottles, tins and cans ready for your recycling collection and use the recycling centres found all over the New Forest to recycle glass, textiles and many other items.
This year don’t just dream for a white Christmas, dream for a green one as well.
