Dozens of children raced to enjoy a new community play area, giving it the seal of approval when it was officially opened to the public on Friday, 31 July.

A new toddler play area, wooded youth active area and nature garden for protected wildlife has been created for the whole community to enjoy at Challenger Way, Dibden.

NFDC portfolio holder for leisure, culture and youth matters, Cllr Di Brooks, said:

“I am really happy to see another playground launched. Congratulations to all involved and may the children have many years of enjoyment from it.”

The new play area and improved park compliments the planning and development of private and social housing, a day centre, and strategic cycle and footpath routes.

The open space development is a partnership project between New Forest District Council (NFDC) and Hythe and Dibden Parish Council (HDPC), in consultation with the local community.

The project has been funded by developer’s contributions, capital from HDPC, NFDC and HCC, as well as a successful lottery bid by NFDC and funding from the Youth Opportunities Fund HCC.

Cutting the customary ribbon at the launch, local member Cllr Maureen McLean said:

“The residents and children of the estate have been a big part of this project and I am pleased to now hand it over to them. This is yours and I hope you enjoy it.”

Chairman of Hythe and Dibden Parish Council Cllr David Smith added:

“We are delighted with the result. This has truly been a collaborative project and would have not been possible without everyone working together. We have involved the community right from the start – from the consultation stage, right to the very end when they helped with planting just a few weeks ago!”
